Strategic Plan 2024-2029

The Graduate Program in Speech-Language Pathology is committed to academic and clinical excellence. Informed by our Â鶹Çø and Katz School mission, this strategic plan identifies the ways in which the program intends to achieve its vision for a successful future.

The strategic plan is a living set of priorities that evolve as students, faculty, and the professional environment advances. It is reviewed, analyzed, and revised regularly during the faculty meetings and the annual retreat. It is updated to adapt to trends in learning, the profession, ongoing assessment of the student body, and academic and clinical feedback from external partners, stakeholders, and alumni.

Through an ongoing process, faculty within the program have established the following strategic planning goals as specified in Standard 1.3 of the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) Standards for Accreditation of Graduate Education Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology:

Goal 1: Student Recruitment and Retention

  1. Maintain enrollment of a high-quality, diverse student body, committed to academic and clinical excellence.
  2. Utilize a holistic review process for applications to ensure the selection of a broad and diverse student body.
  3. Foster meaningful connections between prospective students and faculty to highlight the program’s unique medically focused and innovative curriculum.
  4. Develop and disseminate a repository of university, local and national resources to support student success and overall well-being.

Goal 2: Faculty Recruitment and Retention

  1. Enhance faculty development through ongoing training, continuing education, and mentorship programs.
  2. Provide financial support for faculty research, continuing education, and scholarly activities.
  3. Encourage active participation in professional organizations at the regional, national, and international levels.
  4. Proactively recruit doctoral-level faculty members (full-time and adjunct) to support program expansion and academic excellence.
  5. Maximize faculty expertise by assigning course content based on specialized knowledge and experience.

Goal 3: Recognition and Excellence in Education and Outreach

  1. Secure diverse clinical externships to serve a wide range of populations across the lifespan and spectrum of disorders.
  2. Develop community-based clinical initiatives to increase access to speech-language services for underserved populations.
  3. Regularly assess and refine curriculum components based on data-driven feedback from faculty, students, clinical supervisors, and alumni.
  4. Promote student leadership and professional engagement through active participation in NSSLHA, the Jewish Caucus, and honor societies.

Goal 4. Program Collaboration & Expansion

  1. The department will increase the number of IPE offerings in collaboration with university health sciences partners.
  2. To improve the paucity of terminal degree recipients within Health Sciences, the department will develop a EdD degree in Health Professions Education Leadership that prepares early career professionals for academic and leadership roles in healthcare education, research, and administration.
