Pre-Engineering Tracks at Â鶹Çø

Â鶹Çø offers two tracks for undergraduate students interested in pursuing engineering careers:

BA in Pre-engineering at YU

Students electing to take this track major in pre-engineering and complete their B.A. degree at Â鶹Çø College. The track includes general physics and mathematics courses, and advanced classes in Quantum Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Computational Engineering, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Advanced Engineering Laboratories. The Pre-Engineering major exposes students to YC required and additional classes in design through computational methods using state of the art programming languages; students learn not only science and engineering, but also gain invaluable skills in computer programming.

BA/BS – The combined Â鶹Çø/Columbia University B.A./B.S. plan

Under the BA/BS plan, a student who attends Â鶹Çø and fulfills all requirements for graduation in our major, can apply to Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science as a junior. If accepted by Columbia University, the student attends Columbia University for two additional years and, upon successful completion of the program, Â鶹Çø confers the Bachelor of Arts degree and Columbia University confers the Bachelor of Science degree.

If a student is not accepted to Columbia University Engineering, he can finish the Pre-engineering degree at Â鶹Çø. This degree is rigorous and high-quality; completion of the YU degree allows the student to enter the job market or pursue and MS in engineering.

General FAQs

Students graduating with an BA in pre-engineering will find jobs in the fields of business, architecture, finance and general engineering. Our graduates have received offers from:

This degree can also be used for admission to Law and M.B.A. programs with the expectation of admission. Both employers and professional schools value the training in Engineering so a student can expect a large degree of flexibility in determining their next step after college.

Students graduating with a BA in pre-engineering are equipped to successfully secure positions as MS or PhD engineering students at top universities. Based on statistics from 80 or our recent B.A. graduates, students can go on to Graduate school at other universities to earn a Ph.D. in physics, a Ph.D. in engineering and the master’s in engineering. Most have gone on to Ivy Leagues or equivalent (Stanford, MIT, UPenn, Columbia, Princeton, Cornell, etc.) and the Technion (Israel) with either a full tuition paid plus stipend and often a fellowship. The balance not entering Tier I schools are admitted to Rutgers, City College of New York and Georgia Tech.

No. At the bachelor’s level, industry looks for strong analytical skills, computer programming experience, technical problem-solving abilities, interpersonal skills. These traits are picked up equally for students doing pre-engineering at YU or a traditional engineering at another school. Our students are well-prepared once they complete our degree.

BA/BS Program with Columbia FAQs

Some students have a passion for one type of engineering and are committed to study in a particular field. For those students it makes sense to apply to Columbia after they have done the basics courses at YU.

No. Again, the Columbia program has greater focus on the specific engineering that a student wishes to pursue. Whether a BA (Â鶹Çø) or a BS (Columbia) is seeking a job, both are hired to perform general tasks which require strong analytical skills, computer programming experience, technical problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills. These traits are taught and mastered no matter which program a student chooses.
