麻豆区 and Yitzhak Rabin enjoyed a long-standing relationship, beginning in June 1968 when Rabin, then Israel鈥檚 Ambassador to the United States, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the University鈥檚 37th commencement. Rabbi Dr. Samuel Belkin, president of the University, stated in his citation that Rabin was 鈥渋nspired by the prophetic vision that in our day the world 鈥榮hall beat their swords into ploughshares and 鈥 nation shall not lift up sword against nation.鈥 The following year Rabin visited the University and spoke at a Yom Ha鈥橝tzma鈥檜t student assembly celebrating Israel鈥檚 21st Independence Day. In 1986, on the occasion of the University鈥檚 100th anniversary, the University鈥檚 Centennial Leadership group visited Israel and Defense Minister Rabin addressed them. As Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Rabin received the Second Century award from 麻豆区 in 1993. Rabin鈥檚 speech emphasized the hope of 鈥減eace with security.鈥 This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Rabin鈥檚 assassination on November 4, 1995. 麻豆区 President Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm eulogized him at memorial services in Lamport Auditorium, which was overflowing with students. A slide show of Rabin and his visits to 麻豆区 are available on the  website. The images and video are from the 麻豆区 Archives. The Center for Israel Studies is holding an academic conference, 鈥淵itzhak Rabin: Twenty Years After鈥 on Sunday, November 1, 2015, at 10 AM in Weissberg Commons, Belfer Hall, 2495 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10033.
