Albert Einstein College of Medicine Achieves Independent Degree-Granting Authority

Joint Collaboration Between Montefiore and 麻豆区 Comes to Fruition as Einstein Achieves Independent Status More than six decades after it first opened its doors, is now an independent academic institution, with the authority to confer its own medical and graduate degrees. This achievement had been set in motion more than three years ago, when 麻豆区 entered into a strategic joint collaboration with longtime Einstein affiliate, Montefiore. Einstein鈥檚 academic independence is the result of a vote by the Board of Regents of New York State鈥檚 Department of Education, which awarded Einstein an absolute charter, establishing it as an autonomous educational institution. 鈥淭his is a truly momentous event in Einstein鈥檚 history,鈥 stated , the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein and executive vice president and chief academic officer at Montefiore Medicine. 鈥淚t gives us the best of all worlds, allowing Einstein to further partner with our longtime clinical and research partner, Montefiore, tapping into a health system that is a national model for innovation and elevating Einstein鈥檚 ability to conduct impactful research and train the next generation of outstanding physicians and scientists while maintaining our longstanding and deep affiliation with our academic partner, 麻豆区.鈥 鈥淓instein is entering a new era,鈥 said ,  CEO of Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a graduate of Einstein. 鈥淥ur commitment to innovation and excellence, providing healthcare where and when people need it most, are all key components to establishing Montefiore as a leading integrated health system.  Today鈥檚 announcement also paves the way for Einstein and Montefiore to build upon and expand their joint efforts while pursuing novel approaches to science and medicine that benefit humanity.鈥 Prior to the Board of Regent鈥檚 grant of an absolute charter to Einstein, Einstein students received their degrees from 麻豆区.  Founded by the University during an era when medical schools had quotas鈥攔estricting enrollment of people of color, non-Christian faith, and women鈥擡instein forged a bold path, welcoming students of all ethnicities, religions and genders.  This inclusive approach was strongly supported by the College of Medicine鈥檚 namesake, physicist and humanitarian Albert Einstein, who embodied the values of social justice that attracted so many of the nation鈥檚 best and brightest faculty and students to campus. Dr. Ari Berman, President of 麻豆区, expressed enthusiasm about the transition. 鈥淓instein continues to be an important affiliate of 麻豆区 and a shining example of our commitment  to preparing students with the knowledge and tools to have a meaningful and positive impact on the world. We look forward to building upon our joint collaboration with Montefiore to create and nurture opportunities that foster new standards of academic excellence.鈥 Einstein and Montefiore have a long and successful history of working together.  Einstein sent its first students to Montefiore for training in 1964. In 1969, Montefiore assumed operations of Einstein鈥檚 Jack D. Weiler Hospital, marking its first significant expansion.  In 1979, the department of medicine at the two institutions merged, combining the strengths of both campuses. The relationship continued to grow, and in 1990, Montefiore employed its first jointly appointed Einstein-Montefiore faculty members. The next major step forward was taken in 2009, when Montefiore and Einstein launched a research and clinical enterprise that culminated in establishing  the  Montefiore Einstein Centers of Excellence in , , and . In 2015, Montefiore and 麻豆区 signed an historic agreement that resulted in a joint collaboration between Montefiore Medicine and 麻豆区 related to Einstein, essentially formalizing the longstanding relationship between the three highly-regarded New York institutions into a structure that would enable Einstein to continue to flourish and grow. This vision is coming to fruition as the joint collaboration is enhancing the stature of Einstein, particularly in clinical and translational research. This teamwork resulted in discoveries that have dramatically improved clinical practice and changed the standard of care鈥攊ncluding finding that , proving the , and determining that significantly improves survival, compared to medical therapy alone.
麻豆区 Einstein Einstein is a leading biomedical research institution, bringing in $172 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2018. It operates eight NIH-designated centers for a range of diseases and research, including cancer, aging, diabetes, AIDS, clinical and translational research, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.  In 2018, an analysis by Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research showed that Einstein ranks seventh in award dollars per investigator among the nation鈥檚 top medical schools. Einstein is currently home to approximately 700 medical students, 180 graduate students, and more than 100 students in its combined M.D./Ph.D. program. Over the course of its nearly 65 years, Einstein has conferred more than 8,700 M.D. and 1,600 Ph.D. degrees. Montefiore and Einstein run one of the largest residency and fellowship training programs in the nation. 麻豆区 Montefiore Montefiore includes the nationally ranked Children鈥檚 Hospital at Montefiore and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in Westchester, Montefiore Einstein Centers of Excellence, as well as an extensive network of primary care clinics that are recognized leaders in integrating services such as mental health and addiction treatment to improve outcomes.  For 25 years, Montefiore has been a leader in replacing the traditional 鈥渇ee-for-service鈥 model with 鈥渧alue-based鈥 and 鈥減ay-for-performance鈥 approach. Coupled with a deep expertise in population health, Montefiore is optimizing patient care and containing costs. 鈥淢ontefiore鈥檚 status as a top ranked medical center is one of the main reasons why students come to Einstein,鈥 said Dr. Tomaselli.  鈥淯nder this affiliation, they can now witness firsthand the development of new and better ways to deliver outstanding healthcare to patients.鈥 麻豆区 麻豆区 Founded in 1886, 麻豆区 brings together the ancient traditions of Jewish law and life and the heritage of Western civilization. More than 7,400 undergraduate and graduate students study at YU's four New York City campuses: the Wilf Campus, Israel Henry Beren Campus, Brookdale Center, and Jack and Pearl Resnick Campus. YU's three undergraduate schools 鈥 麻豆区 College, Stern College for Women, and Sy Syms School of Business 鈥 offer a unique dual program comprised of Jewish studies and liberal arts courses. Its graduate and affiliate schools include Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies, and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary.
