Nehama Leibowitz, one of the most influential Tanakh teachers of the 20th century, will be the focus of the inaugural event of Revel鈥檚 special lecture series this year. The evening program, 鈥淣ehama Leibowitz and Tanakh Study: Yesterday and Today,鈥 will take place on Tuesday, October 22. It will open with recollections of Nehama from Mrs. Esther Manischewitz of Teaneck, NJ, a student of hers from the 1930鈥檚, followed by Associate Dean Mordechai Cohen鈥檚 lecture on Nehama Leibowitz鈥檚 integration of parshanut ha-miqra (traditional Jewish Bible interpretation) and literary analysis in light of contemporary theory.
In addition to studying with Nehama at the Jerusalem Teacher鈥檚 Seminary, Mrs. Manischewitz, who grew up in pre-state Israel, was also a close neighbor of hers in Qiryat Moshe, living just two doors away from Nehama鈥檚 parents. She will relate unique reflections on Nehama as a young teacher, a wife and a daughter鈥攕oon after her arrival from Berlin.
Professor Cohen studied with Nehama in the 1980鈥檚, and regularly conversed with her regarding his doctoral research on the literary conceptions of the medieval Jewish commentators. Nehama shared with him recollections of her scholarly training in Germany, and how she arrived at her own methodology based on literary theories emerging in the 1920鈥檚 that she regarded as a valuable alternative to historical-critical Bible scholarship and used to gain a deeper appreciation of the tradition of parshanut ha-miqra.
