Paul Boxer will review current perspectives and research on the nature and causes of gun violence, an understanding of key differences between mass and school shootings and "street" shootings, and best practices in violence prevention. Stephanie Bonne will use a trauma-informed approach to focus on health-related interventions aimed at reducing violence and fostering community integration among patients with gun-related injuries. She will promote partnerships among hospitals and community-based organizations to advance violence prevention. Samson Styles will explore the root causes and effects of gun violence in Black communities, drawing on his personal experiences and highlighting the critical role that credible messengers play in finding solutions. PresentersPaul Boxer, PhD, is a professor of psychology at Rutgers University鈥揘ewark. He holds faculty affiliate appointments in the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice and the Rutgers School of Social Work, as well as the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He was the founding research director of the Rutgers-New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center. Dr. Boxer studies the development and management of youth aggression and violence, and the impact of violent conditions on youth development. He also examines evidence-based practices for helping youth in the juvenile justice system.; Use Code, RUP30Samson Styles is a journalist, documentary filmmaker, writer, and producer. Growing up in East New York, Mr. Styles faced legal troubles. After serving seven years in prison, he turned his life around and began making documentaries, which landed him a producer job at BET News. Since then, Mr. Styles has covered important issues as a News correspondent and has founded his own production company, creating content for various platforms, including Netflix, Amazon, and PBS. Mr. Styles teaches filmmaking to at-risk teens in Brooklyn and mentors adolescents on violence prevention in schools, juvenile detention centers, and at the Rikers Island Jail.Stephanie Bonne, MD is a professor of surgery and a trauma surgeon at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Chicago's near-south side. She developed the first Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program in New Jersey and has published extensively on healthcare system interventions to reduce violence, trauma informed care, and trauma systems. Dr. Bonne was previously an Associate Professor of surgery in the division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ and medical director of the Hospital Based Violence Intervention Program PODCASTRabbis, chaplains, and social workers are often called on to provide spiritual care near life鈥檚 end. Whether in response to serious illness, advanced cognitive or physical decline in old age, or unexpected, tragic violence, health care professionals and clergy need to respond compassionately and effectively with families facing spiritual, emotional, and existential crises.
